How to Get Started with Earned Media
Sep 20, 2021What is earned media?
Earned media is the unpaid coverage or mention of you (or your brand) by third-party entities. These can include media, customers or influencers. Typically this comes in the form of PR. However, there are many other forms, including podcast interviews, WOM, testimonials from customers, and opinion editorials in media publications. Earned media helps build a reputation for your brand, which is crucial in this era of widespread mistrust.
But how do you get started with earned media?
I started my journey on Medium.
Medium is a blogging platform by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs. On Medium, you write stories about literally anything and can self-publish them, which is why it's excellent for people who are just starting with earned media and wanting to try their hand at articles and op-eds. There is a niche for everything on Medium, so if you've got something to write about, there will be someone who wants to read it.
The best part of Medium, in my opinion, is that there are reputable publications within the platform, some of which have a massive following. To get the most traction on your stories, you can submit your unpublished drafts to these publications for curation.
If they like it, the article will be published, and then your content is in front of massive eyeballs.
Getting started on Medium
Getting your story on these publications is not a walk in the park. However, I have some insider tips for getting published, which you can download here.
